Hole No. 11: In the style of William S. Flynn
William S. Flynn was born in Milton, Massachusetts in 1891. A scratch golfer at a young age, Flynn was drawn to golf design and laid out his first course in Vermont in 1909. The work caught the attention of fellow golf architect Hugh Wilson (hole #3). Wilson, at the time, was designing the famed Merion East golf course in Philadelphia, PA. He recruited Flynn to join him and Flynn eventually became the course's first greenskeeper. Flynn and Wilson hoped to join forces for future golf course design projects, however Wilson fell ill and died at a fairly young age. Flynn went out on his own, but later paired with Howard Toomey following World War I.
Flynn's work in and around the Philadelphia area is incredible. He designed dozens of courses, at least twelve of them between Atlantic City, NJ and Harrisburg, PA with another ten redesigns or remodels. Some of his greatest design feats include Atlantic City Country Club, Philadelphia Country Club, Pine Valley Golf Club (redesign) and his most famous work, Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Long Island, NY. Very few of Flynn's course designs have undergone major changes or renovations over the years. The nature in which his course designs have stood up for over half a century is a true testament to his prowess as a golf course architect.
The design of our 11th hole was inspired by the works of William S. Flynn. True to his dislike of artificiality, our 11th features no "chocolate drops" or "dolomite mounds."
