Celebrate the achievements of golf course architect, Donald Ross, the inspiration for our 9th & 15th holes, on Friday, May 20th.
Hole No. 9: In the style of Donald Ross
Donald Ross is the only golf architect to inspire two holes on our course. In his day, Ross was America's best known and most active architect. From 1900-1948, Ross designed or redesigned more than 400 golf courses, laying the foundation for America's golf industry. Ross began his career by serving an apprenticeship under Old Tom Morris (Architects' hole #1) at St. Andrews in Scotland. In 1899, Ross invested his life savings and took a chance on a move to America. In 1900, he was appointed golf professional at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina. It was from there that he spawned a successful playing career in the PGA, and his well-known, accomplished golf course design practice.
Ross' most famous designs are Pinehurst No. 2 (Pinehurst, NC), Aronimink Golf Club (Newtown Square, PA), Seminole Golf Club (Juno Beach, FL), Oak Hill Country Club (Pittsford, NY), Inverness Club (Toledo, OH) and Oakland Hills Country Club (Oakland County, MI).
Our 9th hole putting green is patterned from a genuine Ross diagram, with a deep trench through its center. If anyone deserves a second mention at "The Architects," it's Ross. He believed the mastery of the long iron was a true test of the golfer. Our 15th hole most likely requires a long iron or wood approach to get to the green.
