Tribute Day: Alister MacKenzie (1870-1934) - Hole #13

  • The Architects Golf Club 700 Stryker Rd Phillipsburg, NJ, 08865 United States (map)

Come out and golf on Friday, April 22nd as we pay tribute to golf architect, Alister MacKenzie, the inspiration for hole #13.

Hole No. 13: In the style of Alister MacKenzie

Hole No. 13: In the style of Alister MacKenzie

Alister MacKenzie (1870-1934) was a British physician turned golf architect who built such artistic masterpieces as Cypress Point (Pebble Beach, CA), and with golfing legend Bobby Jones, Augusta National (Augusta, GA). With The Masters tournament taking place early in April, we felt it was the perfect time for an homage to one of the famed courses' brilliant architects.

"The Good Doctor," as MacKenzie was often referred, loved to build holes with flashy, elaborate bunkers that offered players gambling opportunities. This ideology was kept in mind during the design phase of our 13th hole. As the last par 5 on the course, #13 offers the most risk and rewards. A fairway bunker defines the landing area, but tee shots must avoid a pond on the left. A creek runs diagonally in front of a three-tiered green. Like many of MacKenzie's designs, this hole is all about position:  Use enough club to get over the creek, or lay up well short of it. Gamblers will find themselves either in good position, on the green, or in search of a new golf ball to replace the one swallowed up by the creek.
